The latest Senate draft bill will destroy millions of jobs in America and cause immediate strategic harm to our country,” - Elon Musk on X
This weekend, Senate Republicans moved one step closer to passing Donald Trump’s disastrous budget bill, clearing a 51–49 procedural vote. If it passes, this could be the most devastating budget in modern American history.
Here’s what’s in it:
Cuts $930 billion from Medicaid, stripping health care from an estimated 12 million people.
Slashes food assistance by almost $300 billion, putting food insecurity back on the table for millions of families.
Reduces incomes for the bottom 40% of American households.
Adds $3.3 trillion to the deficit — to pay for tax cuts for millionaires and billionaires.
Makes Trump’s 2017 tax cuts permanent, locking in giveaways to the ultra-wealthy.
Pours $45 billion into new immigration jails, dramatically expanding ICE’s power.
Shovels billions more to defense contractors — instead of investing in our communities.

The Authoritarian’s Budget
This isn’t just an attack on health care and food aid. It’s a blueprint for expanding surveillance, prisons, and state power while gutting the programs that protect people.
ICE: Supercharged
ICE’s current budget is about $8 billion. This bill pumps in $45 billion more, more than five times its entire yearly budget. Right now, ICE detains 30,000–35,000 people daily. This expansion could triple detention capacity, enabling mass roundups, longer detentions, and more deportations — a financial windfall for private prison companies and a direct threat to civil liberties.
Federal Law Enforcement & Surveillance
The bill also increases funding for DHS internal security, border militarization, and surveillance technology, as well as additional money for CBP, which already utilizes drones, sensors, and paramilitary units.
Cuts to Oversight
Meanwhile, it guts funding for oversight and accountability, cutting community legal aid and DOJ civil rights offices, stripping away the checks that protect everyday people from government overreach.
The result? Less safety for working families, more power for the surveillance state.
The Bottom Line
Senate Republicans are:
Giving billionaires permanent tax breaks
Adding at least $3 trillion to our debt
Kicking 16 million off health insurance
Slashing food assistance
Supercharging ICE and federal policing
What You Can Do
This bill isn’t yet a law, but it’s moving quickly.
Right now, Republicans are lining up votes for final passage this week. Senators Rand Paul and Thom Tillis have signaled opposition. Susan Collins is leaning no, which could lead to a 50–50 vote, with J.D. Vance breaking the tie. Lisa Murkowski could be the fourth no vote that stops it.
