Kamala Harris has selected Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her vice-presidential pick. I think this is a great choice. But don’t just take my word for it:
When Joe Manchin AND AOC like the pick, you know you did something right.
For me, the most important part of the vice-presidential pick is not the electoral impact it can haven. It’s more about what it says about the presidential candidate's decision-making process.
Trump’s selection of Vance showed arrogance and a complete lack of judgment. With a new set of damaging leaked audio coming out every day about Vance, it appears as if no vetting went into the selection. It also appears that even Donald Trump doesn’t think JD Vance is ready for the job.
In stark contrast, Vice President Harris’ decision clearly shows she is serious about governing. In selecting Governor Walz, V.P. Harris has selected a governing partner that:
Has deep military experience.
Has federal legislative experience, spending 12 years in the House of Representatives.
Has executive governing experience as Governor of Minnesota, where he navigated a global pandemic and a racial uprising, passed bi-partisan budgets, and fought for the working people of his state.
This selection shows that, more than anything, Kamala Harris is serious about governing.
In recent weeks, Tim Walz has shown to be a great national spokesperson. The internet loves him, and he has a natural talent for digital communication. Both of those will be HUGE assets for the Harris/Walz campaign. But despite his newfound popularity, according to a recent survey, 71% of Americans don’t know enough about him.
So, let’s introduce him to them. Use our Governor Walz Toolkit to help spread awareness about him and his accomplishments.
Progressive Populist Policies.
There is a reason both Joe Manchin and AOC are happy with this pick. Governor Walz is a Rural Democrat, who represented a red district in congress and has a progressive populist record.
As Governor of Minnesota:
He signed a law establishing paid family and medical leave.
He passed a child tax credit in Minnesota that gave working-class families an extra $1,750 yearly.
He signed a law guaranteeing a minimum wage of at least $23/hr for nursing home workers.
He signed a law giving free college tuition to students whose families make less than $80k a year.
He banned junk fees and non-compete agreements.
He regulated hospital monopolies.
He guaranteed free breakfast and lunch for all Minnesota students.
He legalized marijuana and expunged the record of people convicted of misdemeanor possession.
He capped insulin at $35 for Minnesotans.
His accomplishments have put money in the pockets of working class people, lowered their taxes and saved them money on healthcare. Republicans will look at this record and try to paint Walz as a anti-business socialist. But, unsurprisingly, the facts don’t support that claim.
Minnesota is one of the best states for Business.
Despite his progressive agenda, Minnesota remains one of the best states for business. Seveteen Fortune 500 companies are based in the state. These include Target, United Healthcare and 3M.
In addition, Minnesota is on track to end 2025 with a budget surplus of $3.7 billion dollars.
Progressive policies that helping working class Americans and fiscal responsibility? No wonder Joe Manchin and AOC are happy.
