Donald Trump’s mass deportation has begun.
According to an IPSOS poll, 66% of Americans support deporting people who came to this country illegally. Only 11% of Americans support deporting people who came here legally.
This distinction is critical to understanding how far the Trump administration will go in its mass deportation plans and how we should communicate about it.
Here is the bottom line: If Donald Trump and his administration limit their deportations to undocumented people with criminal convictions and who a judge has ordered to be deported, it will be a political win for him. If he starts to go after people here with TPS, DACA, or asylum seekers awaiting their hearing, he is much more vulnerable on this issue.
Based on what Donald Trump has said in the past, as well as Stephen Miller, it is safe to assume they are looking to target a much broader group of people than just those with criminal convictions or standing deportation orders.
